ABOUT ME

Washington D.C. Clinical & Forensic Psychiatrist

ABOUT ME

Clinical Practice

I am a licensed, board-certified psychiatrist in adult psychiatry with training in psychosomatic medicine, which is the interface between medical illness and psychiatric illness.  Before entering private practice, I served as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the George Washington University School of Medicine.  In my clinical practice, I see adults (age 16 and up) for a wide variety of psychiatric problems including, but not limited to mood disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders/bereavement, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and attention deficit disorder.  I have a large clinical practice which is inclusive of individuals who identify as LGBTQI+ and have experience in participating in gender-affirming care.  More information can be found on my clinical services page.

Forensic Practice

My forensic practice, research, and teaching have focused on human sexuality, sexual disorders, and problematic sexual behaviors.  I served as the academic editor of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention.  Additionally, I was a member of the board of directors for the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH) and the lead developer for Advanced Training in Problematic Sexual Behaviors (ATPSB).  I am a member of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA). I routinely conduct evaluations for the court for individuals who have problematic sexual behaviors, particularly those that have occurred online.  More information can be found on my forensic services page.

Physician Health

I have 20 years of experience working with physicians who have engaged in unprofessional behaviors. At Vanderbilt University Medical Center, I helped evaluate curriculum aimed at addressing sexual boundary violations, misprescribing controlled substances, and disruptive behaviors. At George Washington University School of Medicine, I lead multiple initiatives to improve the culture and safety of medicine and to address the mistreatment of learners in medical education. I have lectured nationally and internationally on topics related to physician health, wellness, behavior and misconduct. Currently, I serve as the chair of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia's Physician Health Committee (PHC) which serves to intervene upon, monitor and advocate for physicians with mental health problems, addictions, and other behavioral issues.

Personal

Outside of medicine, I enjoy theater, travel, art, and exercise.  As a former student at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts (Summer Programs) and intern at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, I spent much of my academic medical career integrating theater into my medical education.  I have produced several short plays aimed at changing the culture of medicine including a musical.  I have traveled to more than 80 countries.  I believe my background in the arts and exposure to diverse populations has played a great influence in my psychiatric practice.  More information can be found on my philosophy page.
